Dry Risers

How do Dry Risers work?

A dry riser consists of a pipe system that runs vertically through a high-rising building, with a water inlet on the ground floor, external to the building, transferring water to internal outlet valves on each floor.

When the fire fighters arrive, they will attach the fire engine hose to the dry riser inlet on the ground floor and send water through the pipe system to create readily available water for the fire fighters on each floor.

The primary water source that firefighters use is from a public fire hydrant. If you are situated on a large premise, it is likely you will have a privately owned hydrant for the fire service to connect to.

Essentially, these work together to allow the fire service to easily and quickly deliver water to upper floor levels, to extinguish and stop the spread of fire.

What is a Dry Riser and why are they necessary?

A dry riser allows fire fighters to quickly and efficiently transport large quantities of high pressure water to all floors of the building, so they can have easy access to a water supply wherever they are in the building in the event of a fire.

This gives the ability to provide a readily available, high pressurised water source to extinguish or prevent the spread of fire in these high-rise buildings.

In the unfortunate event of a fire, your dry riser is going to be one of the fire fighter’s first point of call and will be relied on to extinguish the fire quickly and safely.

The installation and maintenance of a dry riser is required if your building has a floor that is over 18 metres above ground level, but below 50 meters.

It is imperative that your dry riser is serviced every 6 months due to strict regulation, as the owner, landlord, or facilities manager will need to show a record of the dry riser being tested, maintained, and being fully compliant.

Black and White Fire & Security Ltd. can install and maintain your entire system, ensuring they do not leak, that they maintain correct pressure, and ensuring the connection points are clear for easy connection.

Our comprehensive services will take care of all of your dry riser needs, allowing you to meet all legal requirements, ensuring that your mind will be put at ease.

How can Black and White Fire Safety & Security help you?

Dry risers require a visual inspection every 6 months to check for damage, vandalism or obstruction, just to make sure everything is in good working order.

A dry riser must also undergo an annual wet test. A flow and pressure test will confirm that the water is being delivered to the correct places, ensuring that there are no leaks, blockages or faulty parts, before issuing a certificate of compliance.

Black and White Fire & Security Ltd. can also install, maintain and service fire hydrants. Once installed, it is a legal requirement to test your fire hydrant every 12 months to ensure everything is in perfect working order, and the fire brigade will always have a pressurised water source to connect to in the event of a fire.
